Abraaj division to invest in energy projects

Power stationPrivate equity investor Abraaj Group has formed an energy investment division by acquiring Themis Energy, a specialist developer of power projects in emerging markets.

Abraaj says it hopes to reduce power shortages in emerging markets by investing in energy, particularly in the renewable and energy efficient sectors.

Themis, which launched in 2013, has energy infrastructure projects under development that will deliver 1.3 gigawatts of power and has advised African governments on power projects.

“Successful project development is a critical element to addressing the significant shortfall of energy supply in growth markets,” says Tas Anvaripour, chair of Themis, who has joined Abraaj as a partner in the energy infrastructure team.

Marc Mandaba, Themis founder and former private infrastructure investment officer at the African Development Bank, will head the Themis division at Abraaj Group.
