M&A slowdown in MENA region

Mergers and acquisitions in the Middle East and North Africa declined in volume and value in the first six months of the year.

Consultancy EY recorded 192 deals in the first six months, compared with 250 in the corresponding period in 2016. The announced value of the deals came to less than $32 billion in the first half, a decline of 17%.

However, Anil Menon, MENA M&A and equity capital markets leader, said several deal announcements would appear after the summer.

“There is significant deal activity in retail and consumer products as well as oil and gas, and a secular shift in capital allocation to the e-commerce and tech sectors,” he said.

The largest deal announced during the first half was the $7.5 billion acquisition of AWAS Aviation Capital, a jet leasing company, by Dubai Aerospace Enterprise.
